#2: Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme 2022

The Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme 2022 is exclusive to Ph.D. candidates. Exceptional students pursuing the degrees of Ph.D. are entertained by the Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme 2022.

The aim of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to conduct their research partially at their home institution and partially at KU Leuven. However, the Ph.D. is awarded by KU Leuven.

The scholarship program of Global Minds poses a variety of benefits such as tuition fee exemption, multiple insurances, allowances for travel and research on a monthly basis, etc.

Eligibility:

  1. The applicant must be a citizen of one of the countries included in the VLIR-UOS scholarship country list.
  2. Candidates who have citizenship in the EU will not be selected. The same applies to applicants with a long-term EU residence permit.
  3. The candidate’s latest Master’s degree must have been awarded no more than ten years prior to 1 October 2022 (including the ongoing calendar year).
  4. The candidate must have been awarded an academic grade equivalent to High Distinction or higher. Degrees obtained with a final score equivalent to second class second/lower division will not be taken into consideration.
  5. The research project must be of excellent academic quality, with a special focus on the development relevance of the proposal.

#3: Ghent University Top-up Grants for Developing Countries 2022

Top-up Grants by Ghent University are provided to candidates from all countries included in the OESO-DAC list. This scholarship program is exclusive to students who wish to pursue a master’s degree.

However, Ghent is an expensive city and living standards are high in Belgium. Especially housing and living. It’s highly recommended to have some extra funding. That’s why this funding is called ‘Top Up Grant’. It should be the Top Up of your own financial means.

Each year, 10 scholarships can be awarded.

The scholarship fee consists of:

  • Allowance of € 1000 per month.
  • All-in insurance (health, civil liability, repatriation)


The airline ticket and visa costs are NOT included in the grant.
As a top-up grant student, you pay the tuition fee for EEA students.

However, new students who wish to obtain a Master’s or Master-after-Master’s degree at Ghent University.

  • You should have a bachelor’s degree when applying for a Master program.
  • You should have a Master’s degree when applying for a Master-after-Master program.

The University of Ghent is exclusive for candidates who are willing to pursue Ph.Ds. This program also grants “sandwich scholarships”, granting access to students to carry out partial research from Ghent University and partial research from their home university.
